If you love to decorate with candles, consider learning how to make a beaded candle holder. Using a few simple jewelry making techniques, you can create breathtaking candle holders that sparkle and glisten.
The Advantages of Making Your Own Candle Holders
A special candle deserves a special candle holder, but many of the holders available today are rather ordinary in appearance. Luckily, you can make candle holders to coordinate with your own home décor or create special handmade gifts for your friends and family members.
Making your own candle holders is also a great way to decorate when you're on a tight budget. You can recycle old glass jars or add your own special touch to a basic candle holder purchased from a dollar store or thrift shop.
Simple Beaded Candle Holder
Making a basic beaded candle holder is a fairly straightforward project. Although it's easiest to begin with a votive holder, you can adapt the project to make larger candle holders after you've mastered the technique of gluing and wrapping the beads. If you wish, the same concept can also be applied to decorate the outside of a container candle.
Supplies:
- Small glass votive candle holder
- Seed beads
- Beading thread
- Scissors
- Jewelry glue
Instructions:
- String beads onto beading thread. Use all one color for a subtle, monochromatic look or mix and match different shades to design a funky, one-of-a-kind candle holder.
- Apply a small dab of glue to the bottom of the candle holder. Adhere the end of the strand of beads, then let dry completely.
- Begin wrapping your beaded string along the length of candle holder, adding a dab of glue for every inch of beads. For best results, try to hold the beads as tightly as possible.
- Allow the candle holder to dry completely before using.
Candle Holder with Beaded Dangles
If you have lots of beads left over from other craft projects, learn how to make a beaded candle holder that features dangles of various shapes and sizes. This project is also very versatile because the beaded portion can quickly be removed and changed whenever you decide to update your home décor.
Supplies:
- Beads in a variety of coordinating shapes, sizes, and colors
- Charms in the theme of your choice
- Tall pillar candle holder
- Pillar candle
- Plastic-mesh needlepoint canvas round
- 24-gauge wire
- Small jump rings
- Head pins
- Wire cutters
- Pliers
- Scissors
Instructions:
- Cut a piece of wire approximately the same length as your candle holder.
- Thread a large bead onto the end of the wire. Make a small loop with your pliers to secure the bead. If desired, use a jump ring to attach a small charm to the loop.
- Continue threading beads of various sizes and colors until you have about one inch of wire left.
- Thread the wire through a hole in the outside of the plastic canvas round, then use your pliers to twist in place.
- Repeat Steps 1-4 until you've made enough beaded dangles to cover the entire candle holder.
- Use your scissors to make a small hole in the center of the plastic canvas round. Place the round over the spike in your candle holder.
- To decorate your pillar candle, thread one small bead onto a headpin. Insert the pin into the base of the candle and repeat as necessary until you've created a pretty decorative border around the entire base of the candle.
- Add your decorated pillar candle to your holder and enjoy!
