Starting a Scentsy Business

Consultants work from home.

If you're looking for a work from home opportunity, starting a Scentsy business may be right for you. With a unique product line and good quality candles, Scentsy is a great way to earn some extra money.

Starting a Scentsy Business at Home

Scentsy candles and scented products are all available to consultants to sell from home. All you need are some time to learn about the products, and the ability to spread the word about these great flameless candles. You don't need to carry your own personal inventory, as you can purchase the products you sell through the Scentsy website, for delivery to your customers.

To become a consultant, you must sign up under a current consultant. Use the consultant finder at the website to find someone local, or search the web to find the sites for many independent reps who will always have recruiting information readily available.

The Starter Kit

Before starting your Scentsy business, you'll have to purchase a starter kit from the website. The starter kit costs $99 plus shipping, and includes:

  • One Scentsy warmer
  • One Scentsy bar
  • One room spray
  • One car candle
  • An assortment of scent tester sheets, which you can use to actually smell the entire scent list for yourself and share with customers
  • Catalogs
  • Order forms
  • Home party invitations
  • Business cards
  • Hostess packet
  • Four light bulbs
  • Five clear plastic bags
  • Welcome kit and binder

What You Can Earn

Scentsy offers 20% commission on personal sales to start off, as well as up to 9% on sales in your downline. This means that, if you recruit more sales consultants, you'll earn a small percentage of each of their sales. When you recruit new consultants, you'll also be involved in their training. There are different levels of consultants, based on how long they've been with the company, sales volume, and number of recruits they've brought in. Each level brings with it more perks, such as more commission, and larger discounts on products for personal use.

How to Sell Scentsy Products

One of the nice things about being a Scentsy consultant is that you're free to sell the products in the best way you see fit. If you're not very experienced with online sales, you can schedule home parties and sell directly to your customers. If home parties aren't your thing, you can create your own website either through the main Scentsy site, or independently.

Purchase of a Scentsy consultant starter kit includes three months of web hosting for your Scentsy site. After the three months, they charge a very reasonable $10 per month.

There are many other ways to spread the word and make sales of Scentsy products, including:

  • Renting a table at a craft show or sale
  • Bringing your own warmers and candle bars to the office
  • Taking catalogs to meetings or gatherings
  • Going door to door and delivering catalogs
  • Contacting companies or large organizations and asking if you can set up a small table during lunch or break time
  • Holding catalog parties, in which you send catalogs (or a link to your website) to friends and family, and ask that their orders be combined into one large order and delivered all at once

Sales Requirements

As with all home-based businesses that involve selling candles, there are minimum sales requirements with Scentsy that must be met in order for you to remain an active consultant. In this case, you'll have to sell at least $150 worth in a single month, for every three month period. For example, from January to March, you would have to bring $150 or more in sales during January, February, or March.

Hostess Credits

Scentsy offers incentives to those who host home parties to sell their products, in the form of hostess credits, which can be used towards purchases. These credits are based on sales, and add up to 10-15% of the total sales from the party. There are also hostess rewards, which give the party host the opportunity to purchase items at half price.

Since a consultant can host parties themselves, she can also earn these hostess credits and rewards in addition to commission.
